Gambit is a free, browser-based chess app. It was built to need as little of your data as possible, so this policy is short and, we hope, refreshingly boring.
The short version: no accounts, no ads, no analytics, and no tracking. Gambit has no servers of its own, so your games and settings never leave your device unless you choose to use a third-party feature.
What Gambit stores on your device
Gambit runs entirely in your browser and uses your browser's local storage to remember things between visits. This data stays on your device and is never sent to us. It includes:
- Your current game, saved games, and move history.
- Your local statistics (games played, wins, losses, draws).
- Your preferences, such as board orientation and difficulty.
- If you choose to use them: a Google Gemini API key (for scanning a position from a screenshot) and a Lichess token (for live sync). These are stored only in your browser.
What we collect
Nothing. Gambit is a static website with no backend that receives your information. We do not run analytics, set advertising cookies, build profiles, or sell data, because there is no data to sell.
Third-party services
A few optional features connect your browser directly to outside services. When you use them, your requests are governed by that provider's own privacy policy, not ours:
- Google Gemini Vision (Scan a board): the screenshot you upload and your API key are sent from your browser to Google to read the position.
- Lichess (Live Sync): your token and game requests go directly to Lichess to mirror a live game.
- Content delivery networks (such as unpkg, Cloudflare, and chessboardjs.com): your browser fetches the chess engine, libraries, fonts, and board images from these CDNs. As with any web request, a CDN may log standard technical details like your IP address and browser type.
Cookies
Gambit does not set cookies. The local storage described above is a different browser mechanism and is used only to make the app work for you.
Your choices
You are always in control. You can clear all Gambit data at any time by clearing this site's storage in your browser settings, or by using the in-app controls (for example, Clear Stats). You can remove a saved API key or Lichess token whenever you like.
Changes to this policy
If Gambit changes in a way that affects this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page.
